Breathing

In Hebrew the same word is used for breath and spirit.  It is often unclear whether the writer is referring to the human spirit or the Spirit of God; the breath is understood to encompass all these meanings and realities, and this can also be our experience. In the biblical creation story the breath, or Ruach, of God hovered over the waters of chaos at the beginning of time.

The breath is a rhythmic flow of air from outside the body to the inside and back again through the core of our being. Most of the time it happens without us thinking about it, and yet it is possible to consciously pay attention to the breath and in many spiritual traditions breathing with awareness is linked to the practice of prayer and meditation.

Attuning to the breath helps us to gather our scattered, chaotic attention and connect with our core, that which lies at our centre. The flow of the breath offers a pathway for receiving and giving, filling and emptying, release and restoration, linking us with the wider environment and those around us.
